As we spend more time at home, it is only natural to think of the elements or details that we want to spruce up. Now more than ever, people want to feel a sense of respite, serenity, and comfort in their dwelling. As a team, Heather Scott Home & Design is determined to create a classic, chic, and serene environment that fits our client’s functionality and style goals. In our experience, here are three major components to consider when making a change to a room or planning your next home project.

1. Functionality
When considering a new project our team not only wants to help you create a beautiful space, but we also want the refresh to be functional and work for your family. Questions to consider include, how will you and your family use the space? If you have pets, what special accommodations or considerations do they need? What updates can make your life simpler? Take the time to consider how and why a space is used so that it can be fully communicated to an interior designer.

2. Budget
The budget aspect of a new home project can often times be the toughest topic to address. Our advice is to put together a simple estimate budget by room, especially if you have not worked with a designer before. This can be done by considering the basic items that you may need for a space. For example, if you are working on your living room break it down by item. As you work through listing each item, you will notice that there may be pieces that you didn’t initially think of like lighting, window treatments, or decorative accessories to really complete the room.

When we discuss budgets with both our prospective client and long-time clients, we do our best to set realistic expectations on what a room will cost. Especially if you are wanting a completed room with all of the trimmings, much like what you see on social media, Pinterest, designer portfolios and magazines. Remember that making a furniture or construction change is an important investment in your home.

3. Style
It is important to really consider the overall style that you are aiming for when remodeling or refurnishing. We always recommend perusing Pinterest, Houzz, or Instagram for inspiration. It will allow you to get an idea of the style that you want for your home. Do you want your home to lean more modern or more traditional? How about color? Understanding your preferences and your likes/dislikes will help your completed project be that much more successful.

Considering these three things and discussing them with your family who live in your home is the first step in making a change. If you need guidance on the process, reach out to our team to learn more about our award-winning design services. We are here to help!

Everything seemed to be pretty simple, until point 3. How do I stop from changing my mind twice a day? At least 🙂
Hi Alex! I know it can be tricky to not change your mind each day. We recommend for clients to have a few inspiration images and identify what they like in those images. People tend to ‘pin’ or like photos with the same qualities over and over. Also we recommend selecting classic and timeless pieces, particularly for your large pieces like upholstery or a kitchen/bath remodel. When you have a classic palette of furniture in neutral tones, it allows you to have a lot more flexibility later on. For instance, it is much easier to update your accessories or pillows rather than a sofa every time your tastes change. Also if you have a general style you like for the main spaces, you can always make less used rooms like a powder bath, dining room, or guest bedroom have a different look than the rest of your home. I hope this helps!
