In fashion, the French look is synonymous with a classic and effortless style. It is only natural that the French approach to style lends itself to home interiors, too. Earlier this year our new clients with two adorable toddler-aged daughters needed all new furnishings and decor for their family room. They described their design preference/style as ‘French Chic.’ They wanted their space to feel stylish and classic, while also being comfortable and inviting. Additionally, they needed durable and kid-friendly elements for their young girls.
BEFORE:
The room was a beautiful canvas and had plenty of potential for Parisian flair. The young homeowners had older furniture that they were ready to part with. The only cosmetic change we recommended was a brighter paint color for the arched built-in. The black paint felt too dark and heavy for their tastes.
They wanted to incorporate their existing light fixture that was in the space and their own art piece that had a mix of corals, blush, and blue.
IN PROCESS:
We painted the built-in a soft gray paint color, Benjamin Moore Platinum Gray. We also replaced the hardware with acrylic/brass pulls. Both new elements add some chic detailing to the built-in.
AFTER:
The family room layers in dramatic linen draperies, a new light gray built-in, and pops of pink. We selected durable fabrics for the sofa and opted for a tufted round ottoman rather than a coffee table. It is a safer, more practical option for their daughters.
The accent colors are pulled from the client’s existing art. Dark blue velvet chairs add some contrast against the lighter upholstery. Pink pillows make the space even more playful.
We styled the built-ins with blush and brass accessories to keep the space with the youthful feel of the space.
Silver leafed end tables with aged grey wooden lamps frame the sofa. If you look closely, you can see the delicate embroidery on the linen drapes.
The sisal rug adds in more texture and keeps the space feeling casual and approachable. As their daughters mature and grow up, the family may want to make their family room more formal. A new rug or pillows are an easy update the space down the road.
