I’ve done a few blog posts on the importance of your entry area and the ‘first impression’ or ‘tone’ you set for your home. Most homeowners think of this area as little as possible because they never use it themselves! But, the entry gives visitors a hint at your personality and what to expect while in your home.
This homeowner purchased an older home and decided to make the entry more reflective of her style, which is comfortable, welcoming, and fresh.

BEFORE:
This wasn’t a ‘bad’ entry. But, the front door and brass light fixture were dated and the wall had 3 openings into the formal dining room which was a bit unusual and made furniture placement impossible.
AFTER
The wall openings were closed in to provide space for a chest, cute chair and a great piece of art from South Carolina artist Teil Duncan. You might think closing in a wall would make an area darker and more constrained, but you can see from the photos the entry actually now looks brighter and more open… and therefore more welcoming.
Think about taking a look at your entry with a visitor’s fresh eyes and see what your space says about you. Is it representative of the tone you want to set for your home? If not, what would it take to change it? The upside of decorating an entry is that the space is not large and therefore rarely costly.
